Finlandia
Finlandia is a vodka produced in Finland from Finnish-grown six-row barley and glacial spring water. The barley is distilled into a neutral spirit using a continuous multi-pressure distillation system at a distillery in the village of Koskenkorva operated by Finland’s Altia Corporation. 200 steps in the end-to-end distillation process and about 50 hours from grain to vodka. The 96.5% abv distillate is then diluted with pure glacial water to make the final product. No deionization, osmosis treatment or other artificial purification is used.
The vodka was launched in 1970, in packaging designed by Mr Wirkkala and was the worlds first “Designer Vodka”. Within a year of launch, it was taking the USA by storm and was the first Scandinavian vodka to be considered as a premium product.
Originally owned by Alko, the state-owned alcohol producer in Finland, it’s now 100% owned by Brown-Forman since 2004.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Crystal clear, as all vodka should be.
Nose: Almost neutral with a light touch of white pepper, faint vanilla, and sugarcane- like notes.
Taste: Extraordinarily clean. Cracked black pepper with faint barley bread and toasted nuts.
Finish: Long, light black-peppery finish. This is textbook premium vodka.
Serving Suggesting
The perfect cocktail vodka. It’s good enough for sipping and has the undeniable premium quality feel to it – but only marginally more expensive than house pour products. This can be a real game-changer for your standard vodka-based mixed drinks.
Straight from The Mayor
Fashion is a funny old thing and it changes fast. It leaves premium quality products like Finlandia, abandoned and forgotten as the hipsters chase the latest funky looking bottle. I say shame on the hipsters – go and pay two or three times more for the latest fashionable vodka on the market. Or wake up and realise you’ve got everything you need in a vodka right here considerably cheaper.
