African Whisper Sauvignon Blanc is a classic every day white from Breedekloof, in the Western Cape of South Africa. Breedekloof is surrounded by mountains and the mountains have a moderating effect on the climate in this region. Afternoon shadows from the Slanghoek Mountains shorten the hot days in the region and bring considerably colder evenings. This diurnal temperature variation allows the grapes time to cool down, letting them retain their fresh acidity while still developing ripe fruit flavours.
Tasting Notes
African Whisper Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and fruity aromas of ripe guava and tropical fruits on the nose. Crisp apple and juicy citrus fruits on the palate. Medium-bodied and medium length.
Food Pairing
Sauvignon Blanc as a white wine will pair well with fish, poultry and creamy pasta dishes. However, where we think a lot of people miss a good opportunity is a focus on contrast in food pairings. Food pairing shouldn’t be about the more obvious cliches.
Dishes that emphasize fresh herbs, grilled with herbs, or dishes that come served with a sauce go remarkably well with Sauvignon Blanc. Even bold sauces like Guacamole or Salsa.
The high acidity in Sauvignon Blanc allows it to go great with sharp dishes such as crème fraiche, sour cream, yoghurt, dill, capers, olives, tomatoes, zucchini and squash. The high acidity in Sauvignon Blanc also cuts through rich cream/butter dishes, and dishes that are spicy and hot.
For cheese pairings then this is a wine that will work with most soft cheese. Goats cheese, brie or camembert are good starting points.
For Chinese style foods then think regionally about Cantonese Foods or, something hot and spicy from Sichuan or Hunan. Seafood hotpots, spicy grilled fish and chilli chicken. Trying to avoid meals that are heavy with beef.
