Jose Cuervo Silver
Jose Cuervo is a brand of tequila that was founded in 1795 by Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo. It is the best selling tequila in the world, with 35.1% market share of the tequila category worldwide and 33.66% share of the US tequila category as of July 2013, nearly twice the share of the second-leading brand.
Jose Cuervo Silver is a blend of silver and unaged tequilas of at least 51% agave.
Much of the flavors and characteristics of a good tequila are drawn up from the wood that the spirit is matured in. Oak is the wood used most often in the maturing of spirits due to its durability and high level of naturally occurring oils. These oils, called vanillins, are the main component in imparting flavor on the spirit aged within the barrel.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Hints of soft spice and mixed peels. Dried herbs, baked agaves, and honey.
Palate: Creamy, slightly tangy palate. Mixed spices, toasted oak, agave, and herbal character.
Finish: Slightly oaky, spicy finish.
Overall: An acceptable choice for mixed drinks.
Serving Suggestion
Yes, it is a big brand tequila – but a sipping tequila it isn’t. At best it works with a round of shooters with the cheesy trick of salt and lime. But you have to be smashed out of your head already to make that anywhere near enjoyable. This is a half-decent cocktail tequila at best.
Straight from the Mayor
Tequila and mezcal are one of those drinks that if it’s not ultra-premium, it’s vile. I don’t want to be sued by the makers of Jose Cuervo Gold, so I’ll simply say nothing about which side of the tequila category this one falls into.
If I want a cocktail tequila for partying, then I’d drink Sip N Sip instead. It’s cheaper and I prefer it. Click here to check it out.
